Assignment #5 – The Shadowbox Project

The definition for an identity is qualities of a person that define who they are. Dominant narrative is a story told by people in a position of privilege tell about someone who is not. On the other hand, counter narrative is a story that people who are marginalized tell about themselves. I believe it’s important to tell a counter narrative about a dominant narrative people say about our identity because the dominant narrative is always so exaggerated or a lie. People need to know the truth about you not what they heard from other people.

First of all a counter narrative is a story that people in a position of privilege tell about someone who is not. This relates to me because I have heard many of these dominant narratives about thing I associate with. One picture I chose says that all Latinas get angry easily, That’s a dominant narrative because that’s what I been seeing on social media, people saying that about Latinas. Another picture is saying that Guatemalans are short Mexicans. We are not Mexican and not all of us are short.

To begin with we have to know what a dominant narratives is. A dominant narrative is a story that people with power tell about you but on the other hand a counter narrative is a story that people who are marginalized tell about themselves. A counter narrative to me personally means me telling the other side of the story and correcting what other said about me that isn’t true. One of my picture is saying that the person was born in America but just because of my physical appearance they think that I am undocumented. That is an example of counter narrative because Ia m saying my side of the story and how I see it. Another picture is saying that a person is still person no matter their height. This is a counter narrative because just because Guatemalans doesn’t make then any different form other.

To begin with an identity are qualities of a person that define who they are. To me personally and identity is what make me me. I doesn’t matter whet it is as long as it described who I am. One picture I am planning to put in my shadow box is a picture that say anime openings. I love hearing anime opening because they are very unique and they give me the feelings of when I was watching those animes. That’s an identity because it’s what I like and it’s something that’s part of my everyday life. I also have a picture of the american and guatemalan flag because those are my identities. My nationality is American and my ethnicity is Guatemalan. Those make me, me.
